Do you have someone on your team that you’re not sure if you should let them go?

Today I’m going to show you how to decide when to let them go.

This video is brought to you by Meevo 2 from Millennium Systems International, the salon and spa software customized for your world, simply better.

I was just on a webinar the other day and somebody came to me and said, “Jason, I am so sick and tired of asking my staff to do this one activity and they just simply don’t do it. Should I just fire them? What should I do? How do I handle this problem?”

I said, “First of all, what is it that you are asking them to do?”

They said, “All I want them to do is just shoot a simple makeup tutorial and post it online. I do them all the time. I don’t understand why they can’t do it.”

I said, “Let me just ask you this really simple question: Have you given them a process for filming, shooting, producing, editing, uploading and putting out these videos, or did you just tell them to do the task?”

They said, “Well Jason, if I’m really honest, I just told them they need to do it. I didn’t give them any sort of framework or process, but it shouldn’t be that hard.”

I said, “Look, one of the things you want do before you freak out and fire somebody is you want to examine your process before you examine the person.”

If you have a very loose process or a non-existent process and the process isn’t really there, you need to start with figuring out what your training process is.

I’ve actually put together a very simple training process that is only four steps and will show you how to train someone on pretty much any skill you could possibly train them on.

You just fill out the four steps in order and when you answer those four questions, it will give you the start to a very good training process.

I said to her, “When they went to hair school before they ever cut any hair at all, they actually had someone train them on how to cut and what to do. They worked on mannequins first, then they worked on real people like their friends and family, and then they worked on paying customers. There was a whole training process for them.  If you just throw them out there and say, ‘Hey, go post a video on social media.’ that can be one of the scariest things that people do.”

If you don’t know this, I have heard this stat that says the fear of public speaking is greater than the fear of death! In fact, death is number three on the list. Number one is public speaking, number two is being ostracized by your peers, and number three is death.

So think about this:  Fear of public speaking…well that is posting videos. Fear of being ostracized by your peers…that is putting that video out on social media and having it be a train wreck. If you put it out on social media, that can be the highest risk thing that anybody does.

So before you fire your team for not just very simply putting videos on social media, I would invite you to look at your training process, whether it’s for that or anything else. That goes with any process inside your business. Make sure that you get the training process dialed in before you worry about if the person is doing it right.

If you would like help building a process that will help you train on anything inside your salon, download our four step process for building any system in your salon.

It’s totally free, and it will help you get a great start into setting up processes and systems for your business.

I just want to finish by saying this: If you have a person who is on your team and they are not following the processes that you know work, or some people are following the process and it’s working, but there is somebody who still has a brick wall up and they are just blocking you and saying that they can’t do it, well that would be where you consider letting that person go. But always start with the process before you look at evaluating the person.
